Abstract
Myelelodysplastic syndrome(MDS) and preleukemic syndrome(PLS) are synonyms for
a group of clonal proliferative disorders of the bone marrow that are characterized by
dysmyelopoiesis and pe-ripheral blood cytopenias. These disorders may progress to overt
acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) or cause death of the patient secondary to
complications of the cytopenias. Unfortunately, no totally effective form of therapy has
been developed. In patients in whom the disease does not appear life-threatening from
complications of the cytopenias, conservative therapy is warranted. If the cytopenias
become life-threatening in nature, therapeutic intervention is warranted. Aggressive
antileukemic therapy have also proved ineffective. Antilymphocyte globulin(ALG) is the
treatment of choice for patients with severe aplastic anemia(SAA) without HLA-
identical donor. We report a patient with a hypoplastic myelodystplastic
Syndrome(MDS). The pancytopenia improved and he be-came independent of
transfusions after ALG-treatment.
